Roulette is traditionally a European game, originating in its modern form in 1842 thanks to the efforts of two Frenchmen, Francois and Louis Blanc. The Roulette wheel started its rise to casino fame in the late 18th century, when Prince Charles of Monaco implemented the game to raise fund to buffer the financial problems his kingdom was facing. The original Monaco casino set the standards for casinos in Europe at the time, and helped build the popularity of the exciting new Roulette game.

The Roulette game soon spread to the casinos of Paris, and the sounds of the spinning wheels and rolling ball became the backdrop to the glamour and style of the era. The game looked almost exactly the same as it does today, with one exception. At the time, the single 0 was colored red, and the double zero colored black. This caused some confusion for players, with the result that the zeroes are now colored green.

Today, players can choose between American and European versions of the casino game. The difference seems slight, with just an extra 00 number on the American version, but it swings the odds surprisingly heavily. Almost all online casinos, even American, offer both versions to their players, keeping the European influence alive to this day.
